Industrial Application & Usage of a PSD

PSD is an acronym for position sensing detector. PSDs are extremely accurate measuring and alignment devices that are used in the aircraft, shipbuilding and automotive industries, when exact and precise measurements and alignment are needed.

PSDs use laser-based technology in order to give non-contact measurements over long distances. In shipbuilding for example, they are used in the alignment of the propeller shaft and the steam catapults for U.S. Navy aircraft carriers as well as shaft alignment for other large ships.

In the aircraft industry, PSDs are used in mission-critical building processes such as fuselage alignment and wing assembly alignment, as well as tool and assembly fixture alignment, seat track alignment, hinge alignment and even stow bin alignment.

In the automotive industry PSDs are used to align large truck axles and long truck frames accurately.

PSDs are also used for critical alignment during other building processes such as aligning steam turbines, rail and track alignment, escalator alignment and even nuclear accelerator alignment.
